Canadian Open

The Canadian Open is a ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 tennis tournament held in Montreal and Toronto on hard courts, played in August. Men and women compete at the same venue in the same fortnight, which is unusual outside the majors and makes it one of the few events where you can watch both tours in a single day. The main singles draw holds 128 players.

The Canadian Open is played in two cities at once and swaps them every year: when the men are in Montreal the women are in Toronto, and the following season the two trade places. It is the only tournament on the calendar where the venue depends on which tour you are following.

It opens the North American hard-court stretch that runs into the US Open, and it arrives directly after the grass season. The change from grass to hard courts in the space of a fortnight is one of the sharpest adjustments in the sport, and the first two rounds regularly show it.

Conditions are warm rather than brutal, and the courts are medium-fast, so the tournament tends to reward players who are already physically ready for the American summer rather than those still finding their timing.
