Italian Open

The Italian Open is an ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 tennis tournament held in Rome on clay courts, played in May. Both tours play here in the same fortnight on the same courts, so a single ticket covers men's and women's matches. Each main singles draw holds 96 players.

Rome is the traditional clay tournament of the calendar: heavy courts, long rallies and a crowd that makes itself heard between points and during them. After the thin air of Madrid the conditions here feel twice as slow, and the change of pace inside a single week catches players out every year.

It falls immediately before Roland Garros, which makes the draw the last serious rehearsal for the major. Players who need matches take them here; players carrying an injury often do not, and the withdrawal list in the week before is worth reading.

The surface is the closest thing on the calendar to what the players will face in Paris, so a deep run in Rome is treated as the most meaningful clay form there is.

The Italian Open dates from 1930 and has been played at the Foro Italico since 1935, a complex from that decade still ringed by its marble statues. None of the courts has a roof, so a wet week here rearranges the order of play rather than pausing it, and the schedule can run days behind by the quarter-finals.

The Italian Open is played in Rome, and matches follow the local schedule, so check the order of play against your own time zone before committing an evening to it.

Rome plays through the day rather than into the night, with the last match on the central court usually finishing in the early evening local time. For European viewers that is the most convenient schedule of the clay season. The Foro Italico has several show courts and the atmosphere on the smaller ones is part of the appeal, but they are the courts most likely to be unavailable outside Italy.
