Madrid Open

The Madrid Open is an ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 tennis tournament held in Madrid on clay courts, played in April and May. This is one of the six events outside the majors where the men's and women's tournaments run together, which doubles what is on court each day. The singles draws hold 96 players each.

Madrid is played at roughly 667 metres above sea level, and the thin air changes clay tennis completely. The ball travels faster through the court and bounces higher off it than at any other clay tournament, which is why players who struggle in Rome or Paris can go deep here.

That altitude effect divides the field in a way no other clay event does. Big servers who normally lose their advantage on clay get much of it back, while the specialists who rely on heavy topspin find their shot sitting up invitingly rather than jumping away.

It is the second of the three large clay tournaments that lead into Roland Garros, and results here are the least reliable guide to what happens in Paris, because the conditions are so unusual.

Madrid moved into the Caja Mágica in 2009, a Dominique Perrault building with three courts under retractable roofs. In 2012 the organisers dyed the clay blue to sharpen the television picture. Players spent the week complaining about the footing, and the courts went back to red the following season.

Madrid runs both men and women through the same two weeks, which means two full draws sharing the same courts and a schedule that is denser than it looks. The main stadium has a roof and gets full coverage; the two secondary show courts are streamed.
