What the Paris Masters is
The Paris Masters is an ATP Masters 1000 tennis tournament held in Nanterre on indoor hard courts, played in November. One tour, one draw: 56 players in the men's singles.
The Paris Masters is played indoors, which removes almost every variable that decides outdoor tennis. There is no wind, no sun, no change in temperature between the first match and the last, and the bounce is the same at midnight as it was at midday.
Those conditions favour big servers more than any other tournament at this level. A serve that is difficult outdoors becomes close to unreturnable indoors, and the tournament regularly produces finalists whose results elsewhere in the season do not point that way.
It is the final Masters of the year and the last realistic chance to qualify for the season finals, so the entry list is complete and the motivation among the players chasing the eight is unusually visible.
The tournament began in 1986 and spent thirty-nine years at Bercy in central Paris before moving in 2025 to the Paris La Défense Arena in Nanterre. The new hall takes up to 23,000 spectators, several times what the old one held, and the organisers signed for ten years there.
Novak Djokovic has won the tournament seven times, more than any other player, and the last of those came in 2023 at the old Bercy hall. The move to Nanterre in 2025 changed the scale of the week rather than the tennis: the same indoor court, the same late-season timing, and several times as many seats around it. The first edition at the new site sold out its finals weekend.
