China Open

The China Open is a WTA 1000 tennis tournament held in Beijing on hard courts, played in September and October. It is a women's event, so only one tour is in town. The main singles draw holds 96 players.

Beijing opens the Asian hard-court swing that follows the US Open, and it arrives at the point in the season where the qualification race for the season finals becomes the real story. For players ranked between eight and fifteen, this fortnight matters more than the prize money suggests.

The courts are quick and the fields are strong, because there are still enough points on the table to change a season. That combination produces high-quality early rounds: there are few easy draws at this stage of the year.

It is also the first tournament after a major, which historically produces uneven tennis. Players who went deep in New York arrive tired, and players who lost early arrive fresh and dangerous.

Beijing has hosted the China Open since 2004 and has played it at the National Tennis Center on the Olympic Green, built for the 2008 Games, since 2009. The men's and women's tournaments share the fortnight and the site, which few events manage this late in the season.

Beijing lost three editions to the pandemic. The tournament ran in 2019, sat out the next three seasons along with the rest of the Chinese swing, and came back in 2023. That gap shows in the roll of champions, which jumps from Naomi Osaka straight to Iga Swiatek. The stadium the event returned to is the same one built for the 2008 Olympic tournament, and the crowds since 2023 have filled it.

Qinwen Zheng won the women's title in 2026, beating Mirra Andreeva in the final by 7-5, 6-4. They were ranked 23 in the world at the time of writing.

8 of the 8 quarter-finalists in the women's draw were seeded, which is close to what the seedings predicted. Qinwen Zheng took the China Open title from the number WC seeding, and the final went 2 sets.

Rights to the China Open are sold country by country, so the answer depends entirely on where you are sitting. There is no free-to-air option for this event in the major markets, which is normal below Grand Slam level.

The China Open is played in Beijing, in east Asia, and matches finish before most of Europe has started the working day.

Beijing plays across two show courts with the main matches on the Diamond Court, and the schedule runs from late morning into the evening local time. Everything therefore happens while Europe is asleep or starting the day, and the finals usually land in the European morning. The tournament is worth following on delay rather than live for most Western viewers, which makes the order of play less important than the results page.
