Miami Open

The Miami Open is an ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 tennis tournament held in Miami Gardens, Florida on hard courts, played in March. Men and women compete at the same venue in the same fortnight, which is unusual outside the majors and makes it one of the few events where you can watch both tours in a single day. The main singles draw holds 96 players.

Miami sits at the other end of the same month and plays nothing like Indian Wells, which is what makes the pair so revealing about a player. Here the air is humid and heavy, so the ball slows through the air, but the courts underneath are quick.

The wind off the bay is a factor almost every day. It moves the ball toss, punishes players who hit flat through the court, and turns routine overheads into genuine problems. Matches are frequently decided by whoever adapts to the conditions first rather than by who hits better.

Like Indian Wells it runs over two weeks with byes for the top seeds, and the two tournaments together carry enough points to reshape the top twenty inside a month.

The Miami Open started in 1985 and spent three decades on Key Biscayne before moving in 2019 to Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins. The main court was built inside the football bowl and the outside courts fill the ground around it, which gives the event a footprint no other tournament has.
