Shanghai Masters

The Shanghai Masters is a ATP Masters 1000 tennis tournament held in Shanghai on hard courts, played in October. It is a men's event, so only one tour is in town. The main singles draw holds 128 players.

Shanghai is the largest event of the Asian swing and the last Masters played outdoors before the season moves inside. It arrives when the calendar has been running for nine months, so freshness matters as much as form and the early rounds produce more upsets than the seedings suggest.

The courts are quick and the conditions are usually mild, which makes it a genuinely open tournament: the surface does not favour one style strongly enough to narrow the field before it starts.

For players outside the top eight it is one of the last chances to force a way into the season finals, which is why the intensity of the second week is often higher than the time of year would imply.

Valentin Vacherot won the men's title in 2025, beating Arthur Rinderknech in the final by 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. They were ranked 23 in the world at the time of writing.
