Common questions
How is the tennis season structured?
It opens on hard courts in January, moves to clay in April, spends about a month on grass in June and July, returns to hard courts through the North American summer and Asian autumn, and closes indoors in November with the season finals.
How many big tournaments are there in a season?
Nineteen at the level this site covers: four majors, the ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 events, and the two season finals.
Why does the clay season matter more than its length suggests?
Clay slows the ball and lengthens rallies, so it rewards a different set of players than the rest of the year. A player can be top ten on clay and ordinary elsewhere.
